A word on the Dummy Series of books. Please do not be insulted by the title. They are all excellent books for the novice. Everyone has to start somewhere and this is a great place.

Windows Vista for Dummies Find out all you need to know about Microsoft's newest version of Windows in this latest guide.

Windows XP for Dummies does a good job in its role as the flag ship of the Dummies line, providing Windows novices with a guided introduction to Microsoft's XP operating system for everyday computer users. Its treatment of computer, Windows, and Internet fundamentals is among the best on the market, and author Andy Rathbone has an appealing way of writing that's simultaneously fun and detail-rich. If you're a Windows novice--meaning you don't know how to undelete a file that's been sent to the Recycle Bin, or what a Web browser is, or what it means to "cut and paste" text--you will get a lot out of Rathbone's work. Makes an excellent reference for the "Introduction to the PC" course or the "Files and Folders" course.

PC for Dummies A good introduction to personal computer hardware. Explaining the fundamentals of personal computing to those who would rather read words than look at pictures, PCs for Dummies tells you everything you need to know in order to use an IBM-compatible PC running Windows 98. Dan Gookin's prose is technically astute and fun to read.

The Internet for Dummies Guide to using the Internet, for beginners. Shows how to surf the Web, send email, chat, use instant messaging, and more. A good reference for our "Internet Introduction" course.

Troubleshooting Your PC for Dummies A good introduction for non-experts. Concentrates on solving problems-whether they are software, hardware, or operating system problems. The problems are the ones that the author hears most often-the most frequently mentioned problems from his readers.
